On this page you are going to learn about the the best way to shop without waste; how to avoid all the plastic packaging; and ideas on where to shop. We don't need our fruit and vegetables to be covered in plastic. We don't need to throw away endless supplies of toothpaste tubes, razors, tetra paks and plastic bottles.

Tips on Zero Waste Shopping

• Take your own shopping and produce bags
• Choose fruit and veg that is not in plastic packaging
• Choose wonky fruit and single bananas that will be more likely to be thrown away because no-one else will buy them
• Take your own containers to use for meat, fish and cheese. Many supermarkets will now put the food straight into your containers - just ask
• Take your own bag for bread and ask the supermarket if they can put the bread directly in there after slicing, rather than in yet another plastic bag
• Collect up jars and containers at home to reuse for dried food at zero waste shops
• Google zero waste shops near you. They will sell toothpaste tablets, shampoo bars, liquid soap and shampoo that you can put in your own containers and lots more without packaging

• Make your own food at home
• Grow your own food at home
• If you have to buy things in plastic packaging, buy the biggest packet you can so there is less plastic for the amount of food you are getting
• Avoid little bags of crisps and other items that help making lunch boxes more convenient and opt for bigger bags of raisins etc that you can decant into your own containers
• don't buy too much in the supermarket at once unless it is stuff that won't go off like dried pasta, tins and frozen stuff
• plan your meals in advance so you know exactly what to buy
• Choose the glass jars, glass bottles or tins instead of tetra paks and plastic bottles/jars/containers
• Avoid tins joined together with plastic
• Buy herb plants and keep them alive rather than leaves wrapped in plastic
