We need to stop flying

On this page you are going to learn about the catastrophic impact of flying on our planet.

In the following animation, there is a stark message by Dr Hugh Hunt of Cambridge University conveying just how much C02 each person produces on a flight from London to Australia.

Analyse the poetry and music in the original version of this song here.

Now discuss the following:

  1. Compare that amount of C02 with the amount you produce with a tank of petrol for the car. Does this surprise you?
  2. Do some internet research and find out how much C02 is produced by train travel.
  3. Why do people need to fly? How else can they get to their destination?
  4. What solutions can you suggest?

The benefits of train travel

Businesses, book your tickets for train travel at, who have developed a corporate rail travel platform that provides businesses with tools and information to encourage staff to use public transport. Have a look at this website and compare your journey times to various destinations with flights using flight booking websites. Take into consideration the travel from your front door to the train station or airport and the time spent getting through security etc. What are the benefits of train travel?

Spreading the word

Many people seem to have no idea of the impact of flying on our planet. It is surprising to see so many people still excitedly flying to holiday destinations, seemingly unaware of our climate emergency. What can we do to change people's mindsets?

Task: How can you get the message out to people that they need to stop flying? Could you create a video, a leaflet a website, an event? Work out how you can talk to people to persuade them not to fly. How would you approach the conversation in order to have the most successful outcome? Discuss in groups and come up with a plan of action.
